How to be a Scientist

This week we have been talking about being a scientist.  We started our discussion by talking about our senses. We agreed that we have five senses and they will help us act like scientist.   We also decided that the sense of taste was not a good sense to use because we shouldn't put unknown things in our mouth.
We were given four powders to explore.
We used our sense of seeing

We looked at the powders using a magnifying glass.

We noticed that they were different colors.

We used our sense of touching

Some felt smooth.

Some felt rough or grainy.

We used our sense of smell

Putting a little bit on our finger made it easier to smell just one at a time

The next day we were give four different liquids to compare.  We talked about how they were the same and how they were different.

This time we also worked with partners we had to talk to each other and describe what we noticed

Sometimes we need to work in groups of threes.  These boys took turns discussing what they noticed.

Sometimes one had to wait while the other two were observing.

Sometimes when we use our sense of smell we move the air above what we are smelling so that we don't hurt our noses.  And with the powders we didn't want to get any of the powder up our noses.

Everyone gets a turn.  Not everything smells good.

At the conclusion of these science experiments we decided as a group that we would use four of our senses when we did more science. But we would use our sense of taste when we did cooking experiments.
